Vogue Online Shopping Night

If you haven't heard about Vogue's Online Shopping Night (#VOSN for you guys on Twitter), then you really, really need to get across this asap. Like literally, right now.

VOSN just launched at 5pm today and I'm currently doing some major multitasking. I'm painting my nails, buying sports wear at 20% off from Lorna Jane, sucking down a sugar free Red Bull, budgeting for a Sass & Bide neck piece and getting ready for tonight's Westfield Stylist's Apprentice crowning.

The girls from Klick PR got in touch with me about doing coverage for VOSN. In return I received an early heads-up about tonight's amazing deals on offer (no less than a 30 page PDF document full of them to be precise), and had the chance to interview Vogue Australia's new Online Editor, Felicity Loughrey on her view of  online shopping. Check back soon for the interview.

So there are a few things you need to be doing right now....

Firstly, head over to the Vogue Facebook page where they're streaming live coverage from The Hub. At present, Kirstie Clements, the Sass & Bide girls, Camilla Freeman-Topper and Ruby Rose are all sipping on bubbles in advance to their exclusive live interviews. They might even be announcing more deals so you need to be tuned in while you shop.

Secondly, head here to view a full list of all the retailers involved and what they've got on offer.

Next, take a minute to assemble a plan of attack; what deals you're going to hit first, what goodies you want to score for free and what your budget-to-value ratio is. Some of the offers are on time restrictions so you have to be quick.

Tweet your purchases using the #VOSN hashtag and follow Vogue's official VOSN twitter list, featuring yours truly.

Lastly, go grab a glass of wine, put on those PJs and apologise to your credit card/s in advance.

The Stylist's Apprentice: Brisbane

If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen my tweet about the mysterious box waiting for me on my desk at work last week. A brown paper box wrapped in red and white candy-cane string with a powder blue swing tag addressed to me had me instantly pouring over what it could be and who it could be from. I carefully opened it to find the cutest invite on earth!*

I told you it was cute! Swoon!

Turns out I've been invited to the crowning of the Westfield Stylist's Apprentice at a cute new restaurant/bar I've actually been meaning to check out!

I haven't RSVP'd because I really shouldn't be leaving the house or even my desk as my final week of uni ever fast approaches, but maybe if some other Brisbane bloggers can twist my arm I might just make a stylish exception.

So the question begs, who else is heading along? Would love to meet/meet up!

*This invite was especially adorable after pouring through millions of  RAFW invites at the start of May. Some were cutting edge (Dion Lee), beautiful (Camilla and Marc) and others were a little bit... wannabe? (Won't name names). However this invite definitely takes the cake for cute appeal.

Shout Out: Catherine Ines

Being the creep I am, I like to keep a regular check on my traffic sources. Some times I'm pleasantly surprised where my traffic comes from and likewise I can be equally confused. For example, the google search criteria that brings me the most hits is "puberty". The strangest search criteria I've ever had was "Danni Minogue cleavage" and the most entertaining was "Miann Scanlan bitch". My all time hits come from links on Francheska's blog Fashion Canvas and this random French babe's blog.

But today's shout out goes to Catherine Ines. This girls' tumblr is beyond. Hot chicks with long hair and even longer limbs, amazing (life)style inspo, crazy man candy and a bit of well placed nudity make for one of my new favourite tumblrs. So thanks for the link love, lover! You're a babe.

PS. It's totally cool if you get totally glued on Ed Westwick's beautiful face. I get it.

Drop The Pressure

I've really been struggling to find a way to come back to Fashion Falsehood. I feel like the longer my absence, the greater the pressure I put on myself to come back with a bang. I don't want to disappoint my readers with something over-done, yet at the same time I don't want them to keep checking back to find a static web page.

I feel like I need to come back from my holiday (read: hiatus) with stories of travel, elaborate purchases and a back log of posts waiting to be published. Though I haven't really gone anywhere, bought anything or been near a computer long enough to be inspired. That's not to say I've been totally absent from the online world, just temporarily disconnected for an internet detox. It's nice to unplug sometimes. To fall behind the rat race and be totally okay with it.

The best thing about being away from blogging for so long is knowing you're still on somebody's radar. I've received touching emails from old blogosphere friends asking where I am, I've been tweeted by brand new Fashion Falsehood readers telling me the enjoyment they've found in the archives of my writing, and  the enjoyable daily interactions I have with my new friends on Twitter have pretty much stopped me from pulling the plug for good.

So to say thanks to you all, I'm going to start fresh. Even if it is the same old opinionated rants, inappropriate language and pseudo outfit posts via Polyvore, it feels new to me and most of all, it feels right....

BACK IN FEBRUARY

Hi girlfriends and boyfriends and lovers from the world over. As you would have noticed, I've been taking some serious time off and revisiting the reasons I started Fashion Falsehood in the first place. I've painted myself a pretty big picture for 2011 and I hope you will all join me on my journey this year - the year things will really start to happen (that is, of course, unless I decide to waste away for another year at uni and do my masters). So if you've been missing me terribly which I know you have (modest, much?) don't worry, because...

I'll be back from my blogging hiatus this February.

Until then you can catch me on twitter @miannscanlan, on my LOOKBOOK.nu and the FrockShop blog FS Style.

See you all soon!

Grazia Up Late: The Aftermath

Following on from Sydney's pioneering Grazia Up Late at the Intersection Paddington, the buzz surrounding the Brisbane event could be felt city wide weeks prior to last month's night on James Street.

Loz of Vogue Contradiction picked me up in her mama's pimpin ride and we whizzed across town listening to phat beats all the while complaining about a) the rain, b) our bank accounts and c) how we got ready in under five minutes after working all day. Lame central, right? WRONG!

Turning into James St at around 5pm the style spotting had already begun. First we saw the news crew outside the then unfinished Rebecca Manning pop-up store which was built specifically for the night. Next I spotted the Black Milk model in all her six-foot glory who I later found playing the part of live-mannequin at the amazeballs Calexico grand opening. We got a pretty decent park (sometimes it pays to look like shit and arrive early), and made our way past The Tribune and Easton Pearson. We could hear the music, see the fashionista's eyeing each other off and then like the red sea parting infront of Moses, we saw our holy grail. Behold, Frockshop.com's flagship boutique in a wash of pink light, schmoozy cocktail music and every Brisbane it-girl bumping oversized Balmain-esque shoulders in the one room.

We hobbled over to the store facade (yes, our platform heels prevented us from dropping everything and running) and proceeded to fog up the glass leaving sticky nose smudges, only to realise that the door was a few meters to our left and we were infact permitted to enter this shopper's dream. Tossing  asside our wet umbrellas as if they were as out the LV Monochrome, we entered the room and immediately spotted  Frockshop PR girl Jessy Cameron of Wide Awake Thoughts in the middle of interviewing Camilla Freeman-Topper of camilla&marc (OMG) before being tapped on the shoulder by a handsome gentleman asking if I would like a champagne. Pol Roger? Why, thank you.

A few air kisses, customised FS cupcakes, battles in the changrooms and a limited edition Kelly Smith  x Frock Shop totebag later, I walked out with the much blogged about Arnsdorf Jersey Strap Skirt in Nude. Holy crap. This was lit-er-ally the first time I'd worn a skirt since high school - even if this one does just cover my derriere. To combat my fear of skankiness, I have since teamed it with my grey suede wedges from Aldo, a luxuriously soft model cotton loose fitting grey tank and a grey/blue silk Country Road blazer. Since dying my hair I've really been getting into grey. But I'll leave that for another post, another day.

Where was I? Oh yeah. Heidi Middleton was rumoured to be mingling in Sass & Bide, so we trotted over and traipsed through the store, noting all the pieces I'd seen around and a few others I hadn't. I was pleasently surprised. Immediately we spotted the taller than expected one half of Sass & Bide. More than anything I was looking for the star tattoo that my thirteen-year-old self had so unapologetically admired. And there it was, in the flesh - not to mention the amazonian woman in an amazingly styled outfit.

Oh, I also bumped into Tom from Felix&Slink - all the while making a total ass out of myself on my way back to the car (instert stammering and stumbling here) from the Calexico opening after three too many Veuves and french martinis.

The result? See for your self...

To top it all off, yesterday I was notified by @bdashing that one of my drunken tweets had made it into the pages of this weeks Grazia magazine. Woohooo!!

King Kling

I'm not usually one to follow the style of fashion's cult elite, but rather head to blogs like Jak&Jil where the focus is all on the smaller details. You can read more about that in my interview here. However, in true Fashion Falsehood style, I am going to oppose my own self-righteous oppinion and publically drool all over new 'it' girl Elin Kling of Style by Kling. Why make the exception for Kling? Because it's rare that you find a style icon who can make the basics seem so un-basic, and get it right time and time again. Oh! And she looks fantastic in mustard. The rest you can work out for yourselves...

Advanced Style

Advanced Style, a street style blog focusing on the elderly by Ari Seth Cohen, is easily my favourite street-style blog out there at the moment. I've been following for a long while, almost from the beginning, and it's gotten to the point where I really just can't keep it all to myself anymore. His unique New York based blog has been featured in The Telegraph, NY Time's T-Magazine, GQ, Trendland, The Guardian, NY Mag, et al, and has even been 'tweeted' by Dior. And rightly so. As Cohen's blogger stardom is slowly coming to fruition, I thought I'd share it with you now (yes, so I don't seem behind the times. Isn't that sad?)

Advanced Style's tag line reads as "Proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age" was hard for me to believe at first. I used to think that the elderly were one of two things: Old fashioned or overly eccentric. My vision of old fashioned dressers entailed long silk gloves, knife pleat skirts, awkward waist lines and blue-rinse hair. The eccentric elderly brought images of purple coats, miss-matching patterned bags and OTT reading glasses that framed lip stick stained teeth. Harsh, I know. That was until I shook off my self-actualised stereotype goggles and opened my eyes to the fashion pack that has been around the longest of them all.

Yes, most of the featured seniors on Advanced Style do have their own eccentricities, but I have learnt that anyone who isn't Patricia Field can damn well dress like Particia Field if they wish (and get away with it). Just because they're not sipping on martinis at Bungalow 8, or galloping from show to show during fashion week, it doesn't mean that the superannuated crowd should be largely ignored by the fashion system, nor their old fashioned or idiosyncratic quirks be dismissed as uncoordination.

As quoted in a post on his blog about elderly women colouring their hair (pink, purple, blue, orange, green etc) Cohen says "They defy the conventional expectations that come with aging and instead of fading into the spotlight they shine on as inspiration for people of all ages to remain self expressive, take risks and embrace life."

Blogroll Update

So my Google Reader is in desperate need of a makeover. When I have some spare time I try to catch up on old blogs I haven't read in months, only to find they've shut down or have dissapointingly fizzled out into nothingness.

My mission? I'm going to run a mini blog search contest, kind of like ANTM but without the challenges and photoshoots and the winner is, well... me!

I'm open for submissions so if you have any blogs that you think need mentioning (that are otherwise relatively undiscovered), comment with the link and what your favourite thing about them is.

To give you an idea, I'm after blogs that have substance. Yes, yes, I love pictorial blogs like KnightCat and the like, but I want to hear what they have to say, read all about their adventures and get insights into the life of a budding fahionista. Take the following blogs for example:

Kicks and Threads - Karla designs for Staple, Minkpink and Minkpink Swim. She has the BEST style on earth (in my opinion) and posts outfits, inspiration, sneak peaks, very regularly. I predict blogger stardom in the near future.

(Left to right) Rachel, Jessy and Sara

Wandering Babcia - Rachelle is an amazing stylist who has a whole lot of miles under her belt, travelling and blogging her fashion finds and behind the scenes snippets of her continious collaborations.

Wide Awake Thoughts - Jessy (mentioned previously) used to work at Sass & Bide, but now runs the local PR and online communications for FrockShop.com and blogs for FS Style.

Harper and Harley - Sarah is a bit of a babe and a bit of an all-rounder on the Brisbane fashion scene. She also started Fashion Marketing Online, a blog dedicated solely to fashion marketing/pr insights.

HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!

Brisbane Bloggers

I know Brisbane is a very small place and whatever you say get's around, which is why I won't name and shame who I'm going to whine about. Let's take it from the beginning, shall we?

First of all, I LOVE Brisbane blogs! Coming from a city who doesn't make too much of a mess on the fashion richter scale, I get all warm and fuzzy when I read about fellow Brisbane bloggers or just see that their blogs are getting the praise they deserve. Maybe it's all in my head and I'm a little too patriotic for my own good, but I'd assumed that if and when I were to meet a fellow Brisbane blogger, it would be a lovely joyus occasion? We could talk about other blogs, up and coming projects and congratulate one another for "keeping up the good work"... Apparently not.

Last weekend I met one such Brisbane blogger. I saw her from afar and recognised her from her outfit posts. We used to comment each other quite a bit and built up what I would call quite a positive report. Again, apparently not.

I went over to introduce myself and say hello. I started talking about her blog and one of my favourite posts of hers before I was interrupred with "Excuse me, remind me who you are?"

A little set back I repeated that I was Miann from Fashion Falsehood and that it was really nice to meet her. This is when my blog-family-warm-and-fuzzy world came crashing down around me. I was blatantly told, to my face, "What, and I'm supposed to care? Get out of my way." And she pushed past me.

And that was it. I was left standing there looking and feeling like a complete idiot. I guess it is like they say "never meet your heroes", not that she was a hero or anything, I just liked her blog. But it's a funny thing when you idolise someone and what they do, only to find out that in real life they're a total fucking dissapointment. There, I said it. You're a rude bitch and I ashed in your drink later on in the night when I saw you again out the back. Glad that's off my chest.

If any other Brisbane bloggers are reading this, don't worry. It wasn't you. She shut her blog down a while ago. Maybe that's why she is so bitter, she doesn't have anywhere to vent or post pretty pictures! BUT! Maybe we should make it like Melbourne and organise a blogger lunch. Those Melbournites seem to have plenty of pretty blogger luncheons. I think it's our turn. As for you blogger-bitch of the century. Good riddance. We were all getting over your iPhone, mirror-shot outfit posts of you at work. Yawn.

Anyway, for the sake of relevance, here is my only photo from the night. Oh! Holding my BlackBerry. I got it replaced and life is good again!!

Miann xx

Fashion Sudents Unite

Welcome to my new blog Fashion Students Unite.

Before you painc, no, Fashion Falsehood isn't going anywhere. Fashion Falsehood is a creative outlet where I can air my opinions, post reviews and inspiration (like about a million other blogs out there). However I've been hunting around for something localised where I can find information that a fashion student like myself would be interested in.

I haven't found much so FSU was bred intending to fill that gap in Brisbane's fashion society. Yes, there are websites like Fourthousand etc that update us on all things cultural based on our post code, but what about the stuff the fashion students are interested in: Projects calling for open submissions of work, profiles focusing on fashion graduates and the like?

If you're from Brisbane and want to contribute to FSU email me on miannnscanlan@gmail.com with either your blogger profile details or personal details with article attached and I'll post it for you.

While I've got your attention, don't forget to become a fan of Fashion Falsehood on Facebook and follow Fashion Students Unite.

Blogtastic

I've been away for a few days and came back to find that this little old blog has reached its first 1000 views. If my blog could speak, this is what it would say:

"Thank you to all my old faithfuls (followers) who frequent me and indulge in my pretty pictures and long sentences. I apoligise for my long sentences. Thank you for all your comments, I like it when you comment me it's kind of like our blogs are having cyber blog sex. It's nice. To everyone that hates me: fuck you. I don't like you either. Your anonymous comments are real shit because there are plenty of others out there who think I am a lovely blog. I am only two months young and if I were a real person, I'd still be crapping myself and spewing on your lovely blouses, but thankfully I'm not.

PS. Please buy Miann a camera/tripod/remote. I know she's really poor and is dying to fill me with pictures.

Fashion Flasehood."

So to celebrate, I'm doing a re-post! It's lame, I know but I thought I'd just share with you some of my favourite posts I've come across thus far.

Much love,

Miann x

Rag Pony - Lula #10
This was a post about my favourite magazine - Lula. She basically put into words my thoughts/feelings on issue 10. Emma fucking RULES because scrolling through her posts is like flipping through the pages of a magazine. She cuts out the sweetest images, reviews the best magazines, does the best wrap ups of seasons and goes to all these awesome events and blogs about it.

4th and Bleeker - Chain Reaction
What can I say? This chick is so hot it's fucked up. She's got the bod, got the wardrobe, got the remote to her camera, got the studio and apparantly got the best boyf around. If only I could know her name and stalk her. All I know is she lives in Surry Hills (Sydney)... In this post she's got the whole one side tuck thing going on that's soooo Erin Wasson. Yum.

BEACH 11:29 - Kate Lanphear
I'm going to hunt down Kelsey whenever I make it over to the Big Apple. She's got a poetic streak and is hilarious. She posts the coolest shit and is up for a laugh. Also, she's the only black person (with an American accent) I know which is an extra bonus because if I met her I'd make her say all the typical things, and I'm sure she'd me make me say shit like "shrimp on the barbie, mate," etc. Oh, and she's actually met Kate Lanphear in person.

How do you incoroporate fashion and quotes without looking like one of those twelve-year-olds who decides they're suddenly obsessed with Coco Chanel and puts her quotes in their MSN names? Do what Jessica of January does. She chucks together inspiring fashion collages and always throws in a handy quote. If she's not cutting and pasting, she's purchase posting, sharing pretty pictures and calling hot chicks spotted on cobrasnake "cobra cuties". PS. she has mad tattoos.

Well for starters, tobacco and leather are two of my favourite things which instantly ticks the blog-name box for this girl. Always posting the upmost of inspirational pictures, Abbey who studies fashion textile design in London has a pretty sweet blog. She's also an awesome drawer. I loved this post because I have a thing for animal masks.

This is the official blog of my official hero. After reading her book Dear Diary because it sounded like it was going to be similar to Go Ask Alice, I instantly fell inlove with Lesley. She writes like my other hero Mia Tampino (who writes for Frankie but also had a stint at Russh). But my two worlds collided when Lesley started doing a column for Russh. Talk about creaming your pants. Whoaaaa. Lesley keeps it realer than real.
Photo: InterviewMagazine

Daniella is super hot and has sweet clothes/taste in images. Nuff said. All the photos in this post rule. This house is super run down and super filthy. It's a super post!

I don't know where she sources them from but Silvie of How Cutee pretty much posts stills from all your favourite movies. You know, the kind of movies you are instantly obsessed with and want to watch a further three times plus all the extras on the DVD. Yeah well she posts the stills you can't seem to find on google images. For me, The Virgin Suicides was one of those movies so it's only natural this is my favourite post of hers.
